The Trail Certification Process

Creating a forest therapy trail is not just about marking a route.

It is a thoughtful process that helps shape a place for slowness, sensory engagement, safety, and a lasting relationship with the land. Somatic Ecotherapy guides that process from early assessment through final certification.

Each step helps clarify what your land can support, what improvements may be needed, and how the trail can reflect both ANFT standards and your organization’s mission. The goal is to create a restorative experience that people return to over time.

The Five-Step Process

  • Site Assessment

The process begins with deep listening. This first step looks at your vision for the land, the communities you serve, and the experiences you hope to support. The site is then walked together to assess sensory richness, ecological integrity, accessibility, landscape flow, and safety, while identifying places where rest, connection, and ease can naturally unfold.

  • Recommendations Report

After the assessment, you receive a clear, actionable report. It outlines the essential improvements needed for safety and ANFT standards, along with optional enhancements that can deepen the trail’s restorative value.

  • Trail Narrative & Mapping

Next comes the trail narrative and mapping work. This includes the official ANFT Trail Narrative, GPS mapping, key sensory points of interest, and interpretive language that reflects both the character of the land and your organizational mission.

  • Certification Submission

Once the trail materials are ready, all required documentation is prepared and submitted to ANFT for final review. This step turns the design and planning work into a formal certification package.

05 Launch & Activation

After approval, your trail becomes officially certified. You receive certification, promotional language, and placement on the global ANFT Forest Therapy Trail map.

From there, the trail can begin serving as a place for guided walks, self-guided invitations, hybrid retreats, staff wellness, donor engagement, and other restorative programming.

What Certification Helps You Create

A certified forest therapy trail is more than a physical amenity. It becomes a long-term wellness, stewardship, and programming asset shaped for a meaningful relationship with place.

A Safe, Restorative Experience

Stable footing, gentle flow, clear wayfinding, and supportive places to pause help visitors feel safe enough to slow down and settle.

Deeper Visitor Connection

Certified trails invite sensory engagement, curiosity, and presence, helping people build a more meaningful relationship with the land over time.

Expanded Programming Potential

Certified trails can support guided forest therapy walks, self-guided invitations, hybrid retreats, staff wellness days, donor events, and community programming.

Greater Visibility & Credibility

Placement on the ANFT international map helps make the trail visible to guides, researchers, wellness travelers, and organizations looking for restorative nature experiences.
